I actually have not been painting for some time now. I think I burned out! Plus so much has been going on here which made it hard for me to paint. I learned not to paint when life is in turmoil when I wrecked the background on that last piece so I am laying low until life settles. I have been out taking photos however...out of the house and breathing air and trying to keep my health going strong! Took this lovely picture of swans down by my bridge and I hope to go up to the rice patties north of me where they grow wild rice. In a few weeks that should begin to fill with thousands of swans. It is deafening and hopefully when they arrive I can get there and take pictures to share with you!

BEMIDJI, Minn. (March 8, 2010) ” Embezzlers? Busted. Bar owners with a second set of secret books? Nabbed. Tax cheats? Pinched.

Perpetrators of these and other financial crimes will be hunted down by Bemidji State University accounting students during a one-day seminar on Friday, March 26, when the College of Business, Technology and Communication plays host to The Adrian Project.

The project, a collaboration with universities and the Internal Revenue Service which began at Adrian (Mich.) College in 2002, turns teams of students into special agents for a day, coached by experienced special agents or retired agents, as they identify and attempt to solve a variety of finance-based crime scenarios.

Under the guidance of the IRS agents, student groups begin a five-hour investigation with a lead, which may be in the form of a tip from an anonymous informant, a meeting with local law enforcement or a seemingly insignificant scrap of paper fished from the garbage. The students select their next steps in gathering evidence, usually by taking what theyve found to potential witnesses played by seasoned special agents, certified public accountants or other volunteers assisting with the project. Students will have access to some tools available to federal enforcement officials, including undercover officers, surveillance, subpoenas and search warrants.

At the end of the scenarios, students meet with their coaches as a group, discuss the investigation and receive an evaluation.

The projects rogues gallery will be made up of volunteer criminals from Bemidji States administration, faculty and staff.

The Adrian Project debuted in Feb. 2002 for 25 accounting and criminal justice majors, and has since been offered at colleges and universities across the nation. The project is now headquartered on the campus of Adrian College. Bemidji States event will mark the first time the Adrian Project has been implemented at a college or university in Minnesota.

The student response to this seminar will be enthusiastic, said Dr. James Maxwell, dean of the College of Business, Technology and Communication. This is a great opportunity for the students to have hands-on interactions with life-like simulations. Im sure there will be a tremendous sense of accomplishment when they crack the case.

For more information, please contact the college at (218) 755-3788.

BEMIDJI, Minn. (March 5, 2010) ” Information sessions for Bemidji State Universitys nursing program at Anoka-Ramsey Community College Cambridge Campus have been set for Wednesday, April 7. The information sessions are the first step for registered nurses interested in continuing their educations and pursuing a Bemidji State University bachelors degree at the Anoka-Ramsey campus.

The information sessions will be held at noon and 3 p.m. in room G202 of Anoka-Ramsey Community College Cambridge Campuss Campus Center building, located at 300 Spirit River Dr. S. in Cambridge, Minn.

The program will offer registered nurses a combination of on-campus and online courses, allowing them to pursue their bachelors degrees. Featuring full- and part-time enrollment options with block scheduling on Fridays, students will study at the Cambridge campus during the first two weeks of classes, then return every three to four weeks while pursuing their coursework on-line during alternate weeks. Clinical experiences will be arranged at a variety of sites, with the goal of having these sites as close to a students home as possible.

The colocation program requires a minimum enrollment of 20 students and will be capped at 40 participants. Interested students are encouraged to register quickly; last year, the first year of the partnership between Bemidji State and Anoka-Ramsey, the 40-student enrollment cap was reached shortly after the initial information sessions and interested students were turned away.

Students have been raving about the high quality of this program, said Dr. Jeanine Gangeness, chair of Bemidji States Department of Nursing. Our recent student responses have included positive comments about the relevancy of the curriculum and the accessiblity of the Cambridge site.

The highly successful Anoka-Ramsey program continues a flourish of notable activity by Bemidji States nursing program over the last several years. The four-year baccalaureate program was announced in Dec. 2006 and enrolled its first students during the fall of 2007. The program received a full 10-year national accreditation in May, 2008, and celebrated the opening of its state-of-the-art Clinical Resources Center in Feb. 2009. The program then inducted its first group of students into the four-year program just days after the unveiling of the lab.

Bemidji State University and Anoka-Ramsey Community College are part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. The system comprises 32 institutions, including seven state universities and 25 two-year colleges and is the largest single provider of higher education in the state of Minnesota.

For more information about the program or the April 7 information sessions, please contact the Department of Nursing at (218) 755-3860.

I had thought there might be trees somewhere on the horizon and now I dont think I want that so now I fear the painting is cut in 1/2 with the waterline...so not sure how this will all be fixed...hopefully over the weekend I will have this one finished as well!

Who is my neighbor? This is the question asked of Jesus by an expert in the law. The exchange was around the great commandments in which neighbors are mentioned. 27 He answered, 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" Luke 10:27 TNIVIf we are to love our neighbors, we need to know who are neighbors are. So, who are our neighbors? The quick and easy answer is everyone. It remains easy when we are talking about people who live, work and act like us. It gets more difficult when persons unlike us are to be considered as neighbors. In a broad context 38,000 people live within a 15 mile radius of Bemidji. 84% of the population is white. 11.4% Native American. That leaves 4.2% as a smattering of others. The average age is 35 years old. The average household income is $55,000 yet 57.5% makes less then $50,000 a year. 36.8% makes less then $35,000. 8.4% have household income over $100,000.00. These statistics represent our neighbors.Yet, we can bring this closer to home. Across Beltrami Avenue and across the alley behind the church are several houses, most of which have been divided into apartments that are rented. I knocked on all the doors of the alley houses just prior to the fall dinner. I was graciously received by those who answered their doors. I am at a loss of words to describe these persons, but I will say that they did not look like those who gather here for Sunday worship. Yet, they are our neighbors. In answer to the question, Who is my neighbor? Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan. The expert in the law had to remark that is was the Samaritan who behaved like a neighbor because the Samaritan was the one who had mercy on the man in need.May our neighbors discover mercy among the people of BUMC.Peace,Pastor John

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Feb. 26, 2010) ” Can a person survive without its body or a properly functioning brain? If so, what is it exactly that makes a person a person?

Dr. David Lund, professor of philosophy, will discuss his book Persons, Souls and Death, exploring the connection between souls and bodies and how those disparate entities combine to form our perception of a person, on Thursday, March 3. The lecture is part of Bemidji States Honors Council Lecture Series and will begin at 7 p.m. in Hagg-Sauer Hall room 112.

Awareness of mortality is the price of intelligent consciousness. Lunds book, Persons, Souls and Death, argues that a person is essentially an immaterial subject of conscious states who, though intimately linked by causal ties to the body, is nevertheless distinct from it.

In the book, Lund also examines apparently paranormal occurrences supporting the belief that some persons have survived bodily death. Cases of near-death experiences, apparitions, reincarnation experiences and mediumship phenomena are presented and discussed. Though it might seem contrary to natural law for a person to exist apart from a body and properly functioning brain, these cases suggest otherwise.

Lund, a native of Roseau, Minn., spent his undergraduate years studying the natural sciences and earned a masters degree in psychology before he discovered philosophy as an academic discipline and pursued his doctorate from the University of Minnesota. He returned to his native northern Minnesota in 1972 when he joined the philosophy department at Bemidji State. Lund has published several books, including Death and Conciousness, Perception, Mind and Personal Identity and Making Sense of It All.

Lunds is the fourth of six Honors Council lectures offered as part of the spring 2010 schedule.

Sneak peak at an early review of my third dirt track racing novel. Â It should hit book stores in April, 2010! Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â CHECKERED FLAG CHEATER: A Motor Novel
"Weaver extends his Motor Series with this full-throttle, stand-alone sequel. The summer points chase has begun in the Midwest circuit, and Super Stock rookie Trace Bonham, backed by Team Blu, is on a winning streak. While his sports-energy-drink sponsor is promoting him as the next wonder boy and hes passed every inspection, Trace begins to suspect that his whatever-it-takes crew has rigged his car to win. He can feel it. Faced with an ethical dilemma, the teen must decide if he is only the driver or if he can still be a winner apart from his teams efforts and corporate sponsorship. In the midst of his high-speed adventures, Trace reveals racing terminology, rituals and the mental game needed to overtake an opponent; his grueling life on the road; and his continued pursuit of Melody, the love of his life, all while keeping track of his fence bunnies. Theres no drag here. (Fiction. YA)"

The Schoolcraft team has stepped up to help cover my duties as I keep my feet up for a little while. Ill still encourage you all to stay in touch with current legislative issues concerning charter schools as well as the overall funding for public education. The most recent information concerns the clarification of how charter schools can buy or build their own facilities. This would be a big step in identifying a process that could be very helpful to Schoolcraft. Any thoughts on expansion?

Are you asking, "Is my church safe?" Several persons at the Bemidji United Methodist Church may be asking this question. On the last two Sundays we have had visitors who are distinctly different then the majority of church attendees. These visitors clearly had issues with hygiene, mental health, and substance abuse. There were, no doubt, other issues at play for these individuals. These issues may or may not include trouble with neighbors and the law.All four of these individuals live across the street, across the alley or in the neighborhood of the church. They are our neighbors.I am seeing several responses among our congregants. Every response is a valid response. Each response rises authentically from within each individual. My request of you is to read each of these responses and try and understand how someone might respond in this particular way. Your response is not how everyone responds. However, your response is shared by some. One response is fear. This makes sense - some of these guys looked really scary. Being in the presence of persons we don't know, who look out of control, can touch the natural "fear and flight" instinct in us all.One response is simply feeling the awkwardness of the situation. Most of us don't know how to handle such situations, they are out of the range of our experience or training, so some just feel the awkwardness of it all, wondering what to do. One can feel awkward and not be fearful. Yet, one can feel awkward and fearful.Others respond with a sense of purpose and protection. They engage the individuals in conversation, they keep an eye on the persons, they seek to find a non-confrontative manner to resolve the fearful awkward situation. This is my response (and of others, I am not doing this alone). I was concerned about those who were fearful, and I was concerned about those who were feeling like they didn't know what to do. But I was not afraid and I had a sense of what I needed to do.Some respond in a supportive manner to those who are responding with purpose and protection. They stay close, ready to offer assistance. Some ask the theological questions. What does this situation mean for a church that proclaims their "open doors"? Are these persons to whom Jesus wants us to be in ministry? How do we extend love and grace to these persons?I am sure there are other responses, but I observed all of these this morning. Now, my reaction. I am committed to the security of all on our church property. You will be relieved to know that we are very close to having a security system installed at the church. Research was done about what other churches in town have for security systems. Several security contractors were contacted and made bids. The Trustees of the church have approved one of these bids. The project goes to the Finance Committee on 2/16/10 for funding. If you would like to make a donation to this $4500 project, I would be glad to receive your donation. As soon as we have the funds, it will be installed.Security on Sunday morning is an issue that needs more then an installed system. At our church there are a number of people alert to these issues. They have their eyes and ears open. They are ready to respond as needed. They are prepared to call 911 if the situation warrants such a call. I am prepared to do this as well. I know more could be done. We need to train our greeters and ushers. We need to keep persons posted at doors throughout the morning. If you would like to help organize these thing, let me know. Our church is located on the edge of downtown. It is not surprising that we have such visitors.I am also concerned for the Biblical mandate to care for the outcast. I want to care for these people, but I also want to ensure this is being done in a safe manner. I would not want to immediately escort an individual out of the building simply because their look is unkempt, with hair not combed, being unshaven, and their clothing needing laundering. If it is discovered they are intent on causing harm, then out they go, absolutely. My experience is that if you approach someone calmly and with a kind manner, you will be responded to with calm and kindness. Some might think this is naive, but time and again I have seen this is the case. Most situations will resolve themselves without harm being done. If someone truly needs to be moved on, then it is best to call the police and enlist their help. They are trained to do this. Some suggestions:Pray for these visitors. They need it.Pray for yourself and for your church in seeking appropriate ways to respond.Recognize that there are individuals responding to the situation. If you are feeling particularly vulnerable, remove yourself from the situation. These are temporary situations and you can come back when things are "all clear!"As best as you can, remain calm.If it appears I am as yet unaware of the situation, let me know.If a situation is occurring, don't ask me to do something that pulls me, and others dealing with it, away from the situation. Let us tend to it, and when we are finished we will tend to whatever you need.Read, or listen to Bishop Sally Dyck's sermon "Why Did the United Methodist Cross the Road?" She attempts to answer the question, "Who is my neighbor? Follow these links: Sermon document or sermon audio files. The audio files are labeled "part 1" and "part 2."This is hard stuff. We need to be in conversation about this. We need to support one another. We need to figure out how to care for the stranger our midst. We need to be Christ in the world.

Ill let you in on a little secret. The ground-hog and I are related. Today my distant relative saw his shadow in Pennsylvania as did I here in Minnesota. So what is so magical about this shadow? The shadow seems to have some sort of magical powers over mother nature¦¦telling her when and for how long winter will be here. Some of you might even remember an old-time radio show called The Shadow. For years it kept children of all ages glued to the radio¦¦yes I said radio¦¦as sinister events unfolded. Is this the same devious shadow that makes the determination about winter? Are there sinister forces at work? Ive tried to do some investigating along my family tree to discover what mysteries I could discover to help shed some light on cracking this case. Stay tuned¦¦..for only the shadow knows!

In the next few weeks all Schoolcraft families will be getting a survey that will help provide information on not only our current programs but to the overall direction of the school. Parent/guardian response is important to us and we hope youll take a few moments to fill the survey out. Part of the evaluation process will be the formation of a focus group to go over the survey results. If youd like to be part of this process please contact me at 586-3284. We would most likely find an evening where we could use the meeting room at the library downtown.
